We learned today that neither John Flanagan nor Ken Lavalle will be attending Saturday’s rally. The rally came about after Dr. Rella’s letter to elected officials, including New York State Senators Flanagan and Lavalle, was picked up by local residents supporting public education. Perhaps Senator Flanagan was told by ALEC not to attend? A representative for Senator Lavalle claimed, “his schedule fills up quickly.” More on these two phonies to come.
We received word late this afternoon that NYSUT President Dick Ianuzzi will attend and speak at Saturday’s “Students, not Scores!” rally at Comsewogue High School. Ianuzzi will be joined by Comsewogue School District Superintendent Joe Rella, New York State Assemblyman Steven Englebright, and a host of others.
“This is about raising our collective voice for all policymakers to put kids first and to get testing right.” Ianuzzi said.
As mentioned a few weeks ago, thepjsta.org would soon be debuting two new series on our blog. Today we bring you the first installment of our series “Know Your Friends” (KYF). In this series we will highlight individuals and groups who are friends of public education.
Any list highlighting the friends of public education must start with the incomparable Diane Ravitch. Ravitch is a historian of education and Research Professor of Education at New York University. She served as Assistant Secretary of Education and Counselor to Secretary of Education from 1991 to 1993, under President George H. W. Bush. She has authored several books, including The Death and Life of the Great American School System: How Testing and Choice are Undermining Education.
Diane Ravitch
Over the course of the last several years Ravitch has been an outspoken voice against the privatization of public education and all that it entails. She has used her platform as well known figure on the national stage to defend teachers and argue against the various “reform” measures that have been put in place to try and destroy the industry that we have made our livelihoods.
Ravitch’s blog has become a must read for educators at every level. It is something that you should be reading on a daily basis as she highlights many of the important education stories happening around the country. Over the course of the last year this blog has linked to hers on many, many occasions. For a PJSTA member who has not been well read on this subject matter, it will help you to begin to understand the scope of what we are up against, as well as help you find ways to network with others around the country. If you take education into account when you go to the polls every November, you will learn a great deal about where many politicians stand just from reading Ravitch’s blog.
Below is Ravitch speaking on corporate education reform.
Want to get even angrier about the testing? Read today’s Newsday!
It’s very clear that the spin was in long before the test scores were released…. Newsday’s slant is that all Districts are thinking about now is how to improve the scores of all the students who failed… Channel 7, this morning had a report about how programs are being instituted in NYC to deal with failing test scores and there was a Pearson banner hanging in the background!!!
Dr. Joseph Rella, Superintendent Comsewogue School District responded this morning with, “We MUST find our voices again! We’ve lost our voice because we haven’t used it!!”
Make your voice heard and join with others who demand that public education continue to belong to the people not profit mongering corporations… Next Sat., Aug. 17, noon, Comsewogue High School, Rally for Students and Against Testing!!!!
The testing insanity has to STOP and every one of us needs to join together to make that happen…. Comsewogue Superintendent Joe Rella and the PJSTA invite you and everyone you know to a rally next Saturday to make our voices heard… Right now Engelbright will be there and we are working to get other State and Federal Representatives to the rally too…. Please post this on your facebook pages, distribute it to your members, Superintendents, school boards and every friend of public education you know… Click below to read the letter Dr. Rella wrote to our local leaders and community members…. . Ask your Superintendent to do the same….
